Head Of Underwriting

As Head of Underwriting within the Financial Services Function Compliance you will be a key leader of the regulatory ‘First Line of Defence’ operation within Dixons Carphone, supporting the UK Republic of Ireland market. Your main responsibilities will Underwriting analysis, you will be the key link regards wholesale pricing, red lines such as claims ratios, profit, between the Underwriter and the DC Commercial team.


Key responsibilities:

  • Lead Services activity regarding underwriting analytics for the Knowhow Insurance CSA book, including:
  • Manage production of business cases and investment appraisal including presentations Services senior management.
  • Pricing both new business and amendments to current business that is introduced through the retail network of BBYI and Third Parties including but not limited to;
  • Consideration of the relevance and general acceptability of the business to the Underwriters’ required insurance business objectives & risk profile fit.
  • Pricing – premium; excesses; commissions; service charges in accordance with achieving the profit & durability /probability of achieving hurdle rates within the capital allocated for this purpose.
  • Preparation of a 3 year business plan to accompany all pricing proposals in line with Solvency II requirements
  • Liaison with the Director of Financial Services to ensure that all necessary systems are in place to support the Business including the Underwriting acceptance logic “UAL” and Claims acceptance logic “CAL”.
  • Help determine optimal product structures for the future Insurance/CSA book, balancing capital, tax and regulatory requirements
  • Help lead the overall Financial Services business as a key member of the management team, be open, approachable and lead by example.
  • Ensure smooth transition and transformation of all commercial Financial Service Insurance/CSA activities.
  • Support the Annual Actuarial Certification process as required by law and as may be expanded upon to meet the Company’s wider needs as set by the CEO / Finance Director.
  • Ensure all processes and procedures comply with Solvency II requirements within the required timescales.
  • Any other reasonable task that the CEO may require you to do


Skills & experience required:

  • Advanced commercial awareness and appreciation of customer service needs
  • Minimum 5 years’ Insurance/Warranty underwriting essential in order to bring credible business acumen to inform planning and decision-making
  • Expert ability to lead and work within a leadership team, demonstrating a collaborative management style and building trust to energise and inspire a team to deliver their common objectives
  • An ability to understand and articulate business and strategy, in financial and non-financial terms to a wide group of senior stakeholders, both orally and in writing
  • Expert level XL and Access skills, analytical skills, understanding business context and commercial markets to translate into strategy and planning
