An ideal combination

I studied Psychology at university and then continued my studies to gain a Masters in Psychological Research. The thing that I loved most about the subject was the analysis of data, particularly when it involved consumer-based studies. After graduating I began looking for a graduate scheme that would combine my love of numbers and data with my interest in buying behaviours.

Before joining Dixons Carphone I worked at a fashion retailer where I discovered more about shopping trends and consumer behaviours. It was a great first job and helped me develop my skills, however after working at the company for a number of years I was ready for a new challenge. When I saw that Dixons Carphone was hiring I jumped at the opportunity. Not only because it’s a huge and fast-growing business, but also because I had heard great things about the company’s vision and ambitions, particularly through Dixons Carphone’s careers site, which really emphasises the kind of company we are striving to be.

Putting theory into practice

As a Merchandise Planner in our Commercial team, I now work alongside our Buyers to ensure that we’ve got the right volume and selection of products to effectively drive our sales forward. A lot of what I do involves reviewing sales figures from the previous few weeks and planning accordingly based on what has over or underperformed. Using those figures I can then make a sales forecast and order more stock – collaborating with our Suppliers and Warehouse Team to make sure that the right product gets to the right place at the right time.

The great thing about my role is that it is extremely varied, and no two days are the same. If like me you are passionate about what you are doing, you can really make an impact and see the results of your hard work. For example, when we work on huge nationwide campaigns it’s great to hear customers’ positive reactions – knowing that people are pleased with the products we selected (and that the stock is available for them to purchase!) is extremely rewarding.

To be successful in Merchandising at Dixons Carphone, you’ve got to be driven. Retail is a fast-paced environment and we work with a number of different departments and suppliers, so it’s important that you can motivate yourself and manage your own workload. If you also have an analytical mind and great problem-solving skills, then this could be the perfect role for you.

Predicting Peak

With Black Friday, Christmas and January Sales right around the corner, we’re about to hit Peak season which is a really exciting time for us. To ensure that we’re ready for the influx in sales, we began making our stock and sales forecasts months ago. We have looked at the trends of the previous Peak seasons and have developed strategic plans to drive our business through this key sales period. For example, ovens and hobs are in high demand during Peak as customers want the best appliance at the best price, ready to entertain their guests.

The most challenging part of my job is the constant balancing act of ensuring we have enough stock to satisfy demand, but not so much that we have an excess of the wrong product. Although we have statistics and data to back up our forecasts, you can’t plan the consumer’s mindset or what our competitors may do! On the flip side, it’s a fantastic feeling when you get a forecast spot on.

A great role, and even better team

I was originally attracted to Dixons Carphone because of the company’s amazing reputation, but it was the working environment and people that convinced me to join. As soon as I walked through the door for my interview, everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly and I knew instantly that it was the place I wanted to be.
