Head of Software Development & Engineering

Role Purpose

To provide leadership and management of the engineering function within DCG. The team is made up of multiple internal teams and 3rd parties, spanning several different locations both onshore and nearshore. You will own the strategy and execution for the development of high-quality customer centric solutions.



  • Leading a large, cross functional and multinational team, you are expected to be an accessible and visible leader who is well versed in motivating and inspiring staff in order to get the best out of them. 
  • With a proven track record, you will bring technical capability and lead both operational and strategic engineering initiatives
  • You will be required to set, develop and narrate the DCG engineering strategy. This should cover considerations such as location strategy, choice of engineering technologies and engineering best practice methodologies and approaches
  • Build and nurture suitable engineering capabilities to meet business needs, utilising internal and supplier resources as appropriate
  • Maintain a view on engineering demand and capacity, managing this effectively to optimise value for money of the services provided
  • Facilitate the definition of, and drive the adoption of engineering best practices (e.g. XP, continuous delivery etc) to ensure the production of quality, valuable software products
  • Ensure a close working relationship with the IT architecture team such that any solution developed are aligned to EA standards and architecture, and that those standards and architectures exploit the latest thinking around engineering best practise and opportunities for DCG
  • Working closely with the IT operations function, you will need to ensure the necessary working practises and processes are in place, to handle any escalations that may arise for engineering support

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience of leading engineering practices in the development of enterprise size and scale customer and corporate solutions, within the retail industry 
  • Expert knowledge of Agile approaches and methodologies
  • Expert knowledge of development and Devops best practices e.g. XP, Continuous Delivery, test driven development etc 
  • Working experience of engineering automation and architectures
  • Experience in both in-sourcing and outsourcing engineering capability    
  • Extensive leadership experience (100+) 
  • Strong understanding of software delivery lifecycles
  • Supplier Management expertise
  • Experience of managing both Capex and Opex budgets
  • Strong working understating of cloud platforms technologies eg Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker
  • As a senior position within the department you will demonstrate gravitas, resilience and possess great communication skills, as you will be required to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally
