Postpay Category Manager

The PostPay Category Manager is responsible for building and executing a trading strategy to deliver around £100m of profit each quarter.

There are two PostPay Category Manager roles – working closely together, the category manager will spend the first quarter building the trading & go-to-market plan for the following quarter and then they will have accountability for delivering the plan they have built. The position alternates so there will always be one Category Manager building the plan and the other executing the plan.

The Postpay Category Manager carries direct responsibility for the commercial performance of the category through the delivery of market leading ranging, pricing & promotions.

The category team set the postpay trading strategy and engage multiple functions (including Commercial Marketing, Buying, Connectivity, Strategic & Analytics, Retail, Online, OLS and Direct) to deliver a customer focused and commercially successful proposition & go-to-market plan.


You will:

  • Takes ownership for a quarter (aligned to the network/marketing calendar) on an alternating basis – i.e. one quarter spent planning then next quarter executing
  • Builds and delivers the quarterly category trading plan to deliver the financial targets (volume, margin, market share, network & manufacturer commitments)
  • Works with pricing team to build customer-centric propositions and shares requirements with Buying & Networks teams (e.g. handset & tariff ranging, promo support)
  • Prioritises the most appropriate propositions to promote in each channel using relevant channel, customer and commercial insights. Builds a week by week plan in advance of the quarter covering the key nominations/shouts by channel.
  • Work with the right sell and reward team to build trade plans in advance of the quarter and adjust plans throughout depending on how the plan is performing
  • Present quarterly plans to the Head of / Director to gain sign off
  • Owns flagship launch plans for key launches that fall in their quarter
  • Works with supply chain team to align on nominations, forecasting & clearance plans on overstocks
  • Works closely with the Commercial Marketing promo owner to feed into the creation, planning and delivery of the campaign & alignment to category strategy & financial targets
  • Liaising with Buying & Supply Chain to drive decisions around ranging and overbuys / spot deals, forecasts and planogram
  • Collaborative working amongst your peer set – specifically those within the SIMO, SIM Free and Prepay categories to share best practice, ways of working and also support around key trading period


You will need:

  • Experience in the telecoms industry (ideal) or other fast-paced retail sector
  • Product or channel marketing process experience
  • Ambitious self-starter with proven track record in delivering strong commercial results 
  • Strong communication, influencing and relationship management skills with internal and external stakeholders (at all levels)
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills 
  • Commercial acumen and financial awareness – a thorough understanding of the CPW commercial model will be required to be able to assess and balance multiple, sometimes competing, KPIs
