To help raise the profile of inclusion and diversity matters, we have established an Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) Committee, made up of members of our Executive Committee and senior management. The committee champions I&D across the organisation, ensuring changes are properly adopted and embedded.

Making sure colleagues feel valued, are treated fairly and have the access to opportunities at work is a priority for us. So in April 2018, we welcomed new legislation requiring every employer to publish its Gender Pay Gap. Our Median Pay Gap is currently 6.1%. While this is significantly lower than the national average, we recognise the need to further improve our gender balance and are fully committed to designing and implementing a coordinated approach to close our gap.

We believe our team should be genuinely happy in their roles and we know that in our fast-paced company, an energetic, healthy and safe workplace is vital to making that happen. So, across all our brands, branches, and offices, we do our best to promote healthy living. Whether it’s through our on-site gyms and relaxation rooms, or through fitness initiatives like Average to Awesome, we want to encourage you to love what you do.

“As a Senior HR Business Partner, I feel very passionate about people having the right to choose to have a family whilst continuing to develop their career. So when I returned to work a year after the birth of my daughter, I decided I wanted to balance the progression of my career with my responsibilities as a parent by working four days a week.

I had mentioned this during the recruitment process and instantly knew the team was supportive of flexible working and open to adapting ways of working despite the role having been originally advertised as a full-time position.

Fast forward four years. My daughter has now started school and I have recently returned from maternity leave for a second time, following the birth of my son last year. I was apprehensive about returning to work this time around, given the added pressure of looking after two children and getting them to and from different childcare settings. But doing a four-day week really helps. It means I can spend some one-on-one time with my son and collect my daughter from school once a week – and I ensure I make the most of this time with them.

All new starters follow a 90-day induction plan and everyone has regular one-to-one meetings with their manager, as well as twice yearly formal performance reviews. In 2017/18, we provided our colleagues with 300,000 hours of learning, 80% of which they completed digitally. This helps keep us at the forefront of innovation and outstanding customer service.
Other areas we focus on include employee benefits, which we continually review to ensure we are attracting and retaining the best, and employee communication, where we strive to be as open and honest as possible.

We are fully committed to meeting our environmental responsibilities and limiting the impact of our operations in a way that is both practical and economically feasible. Our environmental policy is endorsed by the Board and covers material issues including energy consumption, carbon emissions, supply chain and operational waste.
Green energy is one area where we have achieved great success in recent years. From April 2018, 90% of Dixons Carphone properties on the UK mainland and Northern Ireland have been powered by 100% renewable electricity. We also have ambitious targets for energy consumption, which we aim to reduce by 35% (from a 2013/14 baseline) by 2020.
Electric Vehicles is another area we are passionate about, and we are currently in discussions with our company car fleet provider to develop an EV option.

We strive for continuous, sustainable improvement throughout our business operation and are committed to ensuring we contribute to society in a mutually beneficial way that uniquely reflects our capabilities.
For example, we work hard to understand and manage our impact within our supply chain and are focused on ensuring our products are ethically and responsibly sourced and actively address any risk of modern slavery.
We are also committed to being a responsible member of every community we do business in, using our unique capabilities to make a positive impact locally. This could involve match-funding employee fundraising, leading and contributing to community initiatives or engaging in long-term charity partnerships, such as our relationship with free, confidential support service, The Mix.
